About Crete Carrier

About Crete Carrier

For over 50 years, Crete Carrier has grown to one of the nation’s largest, privately held trucking companies. Along with sister company, Shaffer Trucking, and wholly-owned subsidiary, Hunt Transportation, Crete Carrier Corporation operates as a truckload and flatbed carrier for virtually any commodity. At Crete Carrier, we are dedicated to our drivers. As a result, we have one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry with drivers staying with us three times longer than they do with our competition. We take pride in our relationship with our drivers. Our professional drivers are among the best on the highways, meeting standards far exceeding those required by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

How much do drivers earn?

  • National OTR drivers start at $.50 to $.53 per practical mile for dry van (Crete), $.51 to $.56 per practical mile for refrigerated (Shaffer), depending on experience. The top 50% of Crete & Shaffer OTR drivers average over $81,300 per year. Pay on dedicated and regional fleets varies. You can call a recruiter for details or search for jobs in your area from our home page to find specifics on pay.
  • Drivers are also eligible for a quarterly safety and productivity bonus.
  • The company also provides an annual profit-sharing contribution for retirement.

What are practical miles?

  • Practical miles are measured from the downtown of the starting point to the downtown of the destination. Many carriers use Household Movers Guide (Short Route) miles. This method measures miles from city limit to city limit. Practical miles are 4-5 percent greater than Short Route miles, meaning drivers get paid for more miles.

What type of benefits are offered?

  • Drivers and their families are eligible for excellent health, dental and vision insurance with competitive premiums and deductibles. Basic life insurance and short term disability coverage are provided by the company.
  • We offer a 401k plan with a partial match on contributions. Dependents of employees may apply for company-sponsored college scholarships.

What kind of home time is available?

  • We have a variety of fleets offering weekly home time or even more frequent in some cases. National OTR drivers earn 1 day off for every 6 out.

Are riders and/or pets welcome?

  • We have a free rider policy which includes children, and a pet policy.

What type of tractors do you use?

  • Our newest tractors are Kenworth T680 and Freightliner Cascadia. We also have some International ProStar tractors in our fleet. Tractors are a mix of manual and automatic transmission. Tractors in our fleet have an average age of 2 years.

Do you provide CDL training?

  • We do not have a CDL school and do not pay for CDL training. We do hire graduates of our approved schools, which you can find in the Student Driver section. Less experienced drivers are placed with trainers to gain valuable experience before going solo.
