Our 2024 “…of the year” award winners for Crete Carrier and Shaffer Trucking were honored at our annual Christmas Party on December 13. Here’s a bit about each of these drivers and their careers with Crete and Shaffer.
Betty Creech
Crete Carrier Driver of the Year
Betty credits divine intervention for pointing her toward trucking 28 years ago. She came to Crete Carrier in 2001 and started building an impressive career. Betty has earned a 21-Year Safe Driving Award and driven nearly 3 million miles. Over the years Betty has served as a trainer and driver mentor. Asset Manager Rachel Thiele says Betty “makes everyone she talks to feel comfortable” and helps new drivers make a successful transition to Crete. Betty says her philosophy is simple, “When you see somebody who needs some help, just go over there and give it to them.” Betty says she never expected to be named Driver of the Year, but she’s thankful for all of the people who helped her earn the award.
George Walker
Shaffer Trucking Driver of the Year
Movies and TV shows about truck driving attracted George to life on the open road and the freedom of a trucking career. “It turns out that the trucking industry has been a good fit for me,” he says. George began his driving career in 1986 and joined Shaffer in 2000. His consistent professionalism and commitment to safety have earned him recognition as the Wilmer Terminal Driver of the Year in 2015 and the company Trainer of the Year in 2018. George says he appreciates that Crete Carrier Corporation is a family-owned company with family values. He says the operations, shops and other teams are “all there to help you” and that support helps drivers succeed.
John McDonald
Crete Carrier Owner Operator of the Year
When John McDonald was seeking a fresh start in 2010, he turned to trucking, and Crete Carrier. He bought his first truck in 2013 and hasn’t looked back. “Crete pays very well. They never lie. There’s nothing to not like about Crete.” Over the years John has been a driver trainer, and he assists other drivers as a mentor. He’s logged nearly 2 million miles and recently earned his 13-Year Safe Driving Award. John enjoys hiking with his dog and other outdoor activities. He says he appreciates the freedom and flexibility he has as an owner operator that allows him to visit scenic spots throughout the country.
